SPOILER ALERT: This post is all about the 13th episode of Dollhouse Season 1 called “Epitaph.” If you haven’t watched it yet, do not read this!

Joss Whedon sure does like to demolish societies doesn’t he? In the unaired episode of Dollhouse (available on the 4th disc of the season 1 DVD), we have jumped only 10 years into the future yet the world as we know it has gone to complete crap. The brain implant technology that Topher and the Dollhouse were doing on actives has evolved so radically that the signal can be broadcast or transmitted through just about anything with an electrical current. It’s utter chaos on the streets of LA as a ragtag team of people, seemingly the only ones left not infected, stumble upon the sheltered yet deserted Dollhouse facility. Through a series of memories, we catch snippets of what has come to pass in the previous 10 years. Here’s a quick, simplified rundown:

  • Echo somehow managed to block the imprints and was fooling the Dollhouse for an unspecified amount of time with the help of BFF Paul Ballard. State of romantic relationship unknown.
  • Caroline, with Ballard, escaped to a fabled place called “Safe Haven” but both came back to rescue those who remained at the Dollhouse. State of romantic relationship between Caroline and Ballard unknown.
  • Boyd was either sent of or chose to go off on a secret, highly dangerous mission that seemed to have to do with taking down the Dollhouse. He was in a very cute looking relationship with Dr. Saunders, whose face had been healed. We don’t see him again so prognosis is not good.
  • Big revelation: Caroline has found a mental block that can shield people from the mental imprints with the help of…Alpha.
  • Topher has gone crazy with guilt over being one of the main architects of the initial technology. Adelle tries to care for him. Don’t know if Caroline ends up killing her or not.
  • Dr. Saunders, aka Whiskey, stays at the Dollhouse in order to send people on to the Safe Haven. She dies after this ragtag team leaves.
  • We don’t know if Caroline and the bunch have survived this long.

If Dollhouse had ended after this first season, this might have been one of the most frustrating yet made of awesome series finales in TV. The sneak peek into what’s to come was both illuminating and terribly shady. Since the show is coming back, this is an innovative storytelling technique. Showing the audience just enough to let us know where we’re heading but not so much as to take all the mystery out of the show. It’s like if you watched season 5 of Lost after having just watched only season 1. I’m just hungry for more and very excited about where things are headed, provided Whedon & Co. don’t pull some kind of trick on us (from what I’m reading online they aren’t).

Couple things about what we did see. First, we’re assuredly going to see Alpha again which is awesome because, yeah, Alan Tudyk rocks my world. Second, it unfortunately looks like they’ll be going for the love story thing with Caroline and Paul which I’m not in favor of at all – you know that won’t end well. Third, I wonder how fast things will start to fall apart? Do Whedon and his writers have an obligation now to fill in the story and do they have to keep in mind that they might not get a third season? How much do you tell how soon?

In any case, season 2 starts two weeks from Friday. Super pumped for it. I do have one little complaint though. On one of the special features, Joss Whedon made a very snide remark about Lost and how he didn’t want to make a show that was “made up as it went along.” Not cool, Joss, and I may add that it’s 100% not true. Very similar audiences here and Lost deserves a lot more of my loyalty than Dollhouse. 🙂
